For a restless mind

Best weighted blankets when your mind will not settle

The evidence here is better than most sleep gear can claim, and narrower than the marketing suggests. Here is the honest version, and the three blankets worth buying.

How this page is funded: we earn a commission if you buy through the links below, at no extra cost to you. As an Amazon Associate we earn from qualifying purchases. It does not change which products we pick or the order they appear in. Full disclosure.

How these picks were made: by comparing published specifications and clearly-credited public reporting. We do not run a laboratory, we have not measured these products, and we do not claim to have slept with them. Here is exactly how we choose.

You get into bed exhausted and your brain starts filing. Tomorrow’s meeting, a sentence you said in 2019, the thing you forgot to send. This is the single most common reason people buy a weighted blanket, so it is worth being straight about what one can and cannot do.

What the evidence shows, precisely

The strongest result in this category is the 2020 randomized controlled trial published in the Journal of Clinical Sleep Medicine. It enrolled 120 adults who had clinical insomnia alongside a diagnosed psychiatric condition - major depressive disorder, bipolar disorder, ADHD or generalized anxiety disorder - and randomized them to four weeks of a chain-weighted blanket or a control blanket. Participants using the weighted blanket reported significantly reduced insomnia severity, better sleep maintenance, higher daytime activity, and reduced symptoms of fatigue, depression and anxiety.

Three things that result is not. It is not a study of people who are simply stressed and sleeping badly. It is not evidence that a blanket treats anxiety as a condition. And it is not a license for us to tell you a purchase will fix how you feel. It is good evidence that continuous broad pressure helps a lot of people settle, which is a genuinely useful thing to know before you spend money.

Try this first, tonight, for free

A blanket is a physical answer to a physical symptom - the restlessness, the inability to lie still. It does not touch the content of what your brain is doing. Before you buy anything, the free interventions are worth a fair trial, and we have written the full sequence at what to do when your brain will not shut off. The short version: get the thoughts out of your head and onto paper before you lie down, stop trying to force sleep, and get out of bed if you have been lying there for twenty-odd minutes.

If you have done all of that and you still cannot lie still, that is exactly the symptom a weighted blanket addresses.

What to look for in a blanket for this specific job

  • Even distribution over maximum weight. The calming sensation comes from consistent pressure, not from heaviness. A blanket that pools into lumps gives you a heavy patch and a bare patch, which is the opposite of the effect you want.
  • Whole-body coverage. Buy the size that covers you from shoulders to feet. A blanket that stops at your knees leaves half of you unweighted and the contrast is distracting.
  • Quiet fill. Glass microbeads are near-silent. Plastic pellets rustle every time you move, which is an unhelpful sound if you are already listening to your own thoughts.
  • Correct weight, erring light. A blanket that feels restrictive rather than held will make a restless mind worse. Get the number right first.

When a blanket is not the answer

We are a gear site and this is where the boundary sits. If your sleep has been bad for weeks rather than nights, if you are falling asleep during the day, or if worry is affecting how you function outside the bedroom, that is a conversation for a doctor and not a shopping list. Nothing on this page treats, prevents or cures anything, and cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia - not a blanket - is the intervention with the deepest evidence base for chronic insomnia.

There is also a specific failure mode worth naming: for some people the sensation of being pinned is the opposite of calming. If a weighted blanket makes you feel trapped, that is a real response and not something to push through. Return it.

Pressure is one lever. The other two are sound and light. A white noise machine gives an over-active mind something monotonous to attach to instead of the silence, and a sleep mask removes the visual cues that keep you scanning the room. In our experience of what people actually end up using, the combination outperforms any single purchase.

Our top pick · The evenly pinned, heavily tucked feeling

1. Gravity Blanket

The brand that made weighted blankets mainstream, and still the most even weight distribution of the bead blankets we shortlisted.

Fill:
Evenly distributed glass beads
Cover:
Removable and machine washable
Feel:
Whole-body even pressure rather than localized weight
Sizing:
Single-sleeper sizes

What it gets right

  • The pressure is genuinely even end to end, which is the whole point of the category
  • Removable cover means you wash the cover, not the 20 lb insert
  • Widely stocked, so returns and exchanges are simple

Where it falls short

  • Priced well above the equivalent YnM
  • Duvet-style construction is warm
  • Sized for one person, so it will not cover a shared bed

Skip it if: You want something you can throw over both of you on the sofa. This is a personal-sized blanket.

Pick 2 · A cotton bead blanket that does not run hot

2. Baloo Living Weighted Blanket

A conventional glass-bead blanket done carefully: 100% cotton shell and liner, and double-stitched baffles so the beads stay where they were put.

Fill:
Glass microbeads
Shell and liner:
100% cotton
Weights:
12, 15, 20, 25 lb
Construction:
Double-stitched baffles

What it gets right

  • Cotton on both faces rather than a polyester minky backing
  • Double-stitched baffles are the single best predictor of a blanket that will not pool
  • Classic quilted pressure - the sensation most buyers are actually looking for

Where it falls short

  • Cotton is breathable but a quilted shell still traps more heat than an open knit
  • No weight below 12 lb
  • Bulky and slow to dry after washing

Skip it if: You run very hot. A quilted construction is still two layers of fabric plus fill, whatever the fiber.

Pick 3 · Anyone who hates the sealed-duvet feeling

3. Bearaby Cotton Napper

The only mainstream weighted blanket with no beads at all - the weight is the yarn itself, so air moves straight through the knit.

Fill:
None - weight is long-staple organic cotton yarn
Weights:
8 lb (kids and travel), 12, 15, 20, 25 lb
Construction:
Open hand-knit weave
Care:
Machine washable

What it gets right

  • No beads means no shifting, no bunching and no rustling
  • The open knit breathes better than any quilted shell in this roundup
  • Doubles as a sofa throw without looking like medical equipment

Where it falls short

  • Among the most expensive options in the category
  • The open weave catches on rings, watches and rough pet claws
  • Heavy knit takes a long time to dry

Skip it if: You want the tucked-in, evenly pinned feeling a bead blanket gives. The knit drapes; it does not press.

Questions people actually ask

Do weighted blankets help anxiety attacks?

A weighted blanket applies continuous broad pressure, which many people find settling. In the 2020 randomized trial, participants using a chain-weighted blanket reported reduced anxiety symptoms alongside better sleep. That is not treatment for a panic attack or an anxiety disorder, and no blanket should be used in place of medical care.

Can a weighted blanket cause anxiety?

For some people, yes - the sensation of being pinned reads as trapped rather than held, especially if the blanket is too heavy. That is a genuine response and not something to push through. Size down, or return it.

Do weighted blankets help regulate the nervous system?

That phrasing goes further than the published evidence supports. What the evidence shows is that people using weighted blankets in a controlled trial reported better sleep and lower self-reported anxiety and fatigue. The mechanism is usually described as deep pressure stimulation, but we would not assert a specific physiological pathway we cannot cite.

How heavy should a weighted blanket be for anxiety?

The same rule applies as for any other use: about ten percent of your body weight, erring lighter rather than heavier. Heavier is not more calming, and a blanket that feels restrictive will make a restless mind worse.

Do weighted blankets help restless sleepers?

Better sleep maintenance - staying asleep rather than falling asleep - was one of the specific improvements reported in the 2020 trial. If your problem is turning over repeatedly all night rather than dropping off, a weighted blanket is a reasonable thing to try.
